The previous campaign was a tumultuous one for Arsenal. However, under the stewardship of Mikel Arteta, hopes are high heading into 2020/21.
Arsenal’s 2020/21 campaign is on the horizon. Their league schedule has been released, certain players have returned to training, and the FA Community Shield is within sight.
Despite lifting the FA Cup, the 2019/20 season was one to forget for Arsenal. A lack of creativity, poor results and the sacking of Unai Emery all contributed to a negative environment heading into December. However, Arteta has completely changed the atmosphere surrounding the club and there is plenty of anticipation ahead of his first full season.
Here are four brave predictions for what will be a fierce and strange campaign.
Bukayo Saka Establishes Himself in Central Midfield
Tying Bukayo Saka down to a new long-term contract was rightfully the main priority for Arsenal heading into the summer after the 18-year-old enjoyed a breakout campaign. He scored four goals and turned provider for 11 more. His ability, consistency, and flexibility made him invaluable.
Many believe that 4-3-3 is the formation that Arteta would prefer to use. It is the setup with which he experienced huge success as Pep Guardiola’s assistant head coach at Manchester City. However, he currently does not have the midfielders to replicate that success at Arsenal.
If Dani Ceballos returns, he would have a very capable deep-lying conductor. However, Saka is the only player currently at Arteta’s disposal who has the physical tools and technical ability required to succeed in the demanding hybrid role. Joe Willock and Emile Smith Rowe are also candidates to play as hybrids, but Saka is ahead of both in the midfield pecking order.
