Cedric Soares, Southampton 2019-20. : Gunners

A lot of comments here have pegged him as a defensive full-back with not very much attacking output.

I just want to add that the context to these stats is different now that he’s with us and not Southampton.

His defensive numbers are encouraging but always going to be boosted by the fact that Southampton have primarily been against the ropes or lacking possession in games which means he is forced to do more defensive work.

This in turn means he has less opportunity or licence to get forward and create.

His attacking numbers when he was at Sporting for 5 years were actually quite healthy and they would be dominant over a lot of teams in that league bar Benfica and Porto.

His key passes and shots on loan at Inter(although he did only play 4 games) were twice as high than this season at Southampton. A few years ago when Southampton had Van Dijk and were pushing for Europe his attacking numbers were also much higher.

With us, we are likely to have far more of the ball in general than Southampton would in games and his numbers could drastically change on both sides of the game, but it remains to be seen.
