Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the current Arsenal captain. And to the Gabonese’s credit, he has took to his role superbly. He leads the team by example, rarely gets in trouble off the pitch, despite what was advertised, and has garnered a terrific relationship with the supporters. In this looming eventuality, Hector Bellerin is the perfect cadidate to become the club captain. Here are three reasons why.

3. He is a well-rounded individual

Society has changed. You hear it said all the time, mostly by the likes of Roy Keane and Graeme Sounness when complaining about the development of young footballers and their mental make-up. But when these dinosaurs spout their rubbish, what they forget is that young footballers are diffierent because of the changed society they have grown up.

One of the crucial differences this has led to is a more well-rounded character. Footballers have other interests. They are not so isolated in the footballing world that they are not aware of other activities. There is a fair criticism levelled at them for lacking awareness of society, but they are more rounded than the one-dimensional shouters of yesteryear.

Bellerin understands how to relate to these individuals. He cares for the environment and societal issues. He has interests in photography, art, fashion. He is a well-rounded character who knows how to communicate successfully with the modern-day footballer. Roy Keane would not be a successful captain in today’s game. But Bellerin might.
