v. West Ham, 2020. : Gunners

It not be a spectacular play, but I think it’s fitting to include in this series Özil’s last meaningful pass before quarantine, a header vs. the Hammers. I love that Özil has no intention of shooting here, and I love that Laca knows that; both position themselves nicely as Aubameyang’s deflected shot rises high in the London sky. Another thing to note: has Özil ever gotten a headed assist before? I can’t think of any. Must have been a blue moon that night.

Fun facts about this game:

  • This was Mesut’s first open-play league assist of the season, which is more than a bit depressing.

  • Arsenal have kept three clean sheets in their past four league games, as many as they had in their previous 23.

  • Since the start of last season, Arsenal have scored 16 league goals via substitutes, more than any other side in the competition. Alexandre Lacazette has scored four, more than any other player.

  • West Ham manager David Moyes has never won at Arsenal in 16 attempts (D4 L12), a Premier League record.
